Max Dupain Books
Three books have been published by Chapter & Verse Publishers since 1999. The
images were sourced from the exhibition archive and collated into themes of
beaches, Sydney and Australians. They include some of his best known
images as well as others never before seen by the public.
Dupain's Sydney - Dupain began
photographing Sydney in the late 1930s and continued throughout the following 50
years to capture the changing face of the city. A book of Sydney photographs was a long-held ambition and he was
working on a selection of photographs for such a publication until just before
he died.
Dupain's Sydney is a superb book of Sydney places and people from the 1930s to the
1960s. PRICE $77 plus postage & handling
Dupain's Beaches - this collection is amongst his
best work. In it we see Dupain's fascination with shadows, with sand
patterns, with arcs of seascape - and above all, the people who indulged
themselves on Australia's urban and rural beaches over a period of sixty years. The
images demonstrate how vital a part the beach plays in the Australian
consciousness. PRICE $77 plus postage & handling
Dupain's Australians - the third book in the
series presents a selection of Dupain's photographs of people: his family, his
fellow officers in New Guinea in WWII, his portraits, his nudes and a large
collection of his insightful images of Australians - people often captured in their working
environment. PRICE $77 plus postage & handling
The Sunbaker 1937
"The Sunbaker has fascinated the public and critics alike. It is a paradigm of Dupain's own goal of simplicity at all
costs.
Although the image was rarely seen before 1975, it is probably now the single most widely recognised Australian photograph."
